Spent the weekend going through Seven Samurai, scene by scene, realizing the storytelling powers of Akira Kurosawa. All the performances are strong, no matter how significant or insignificant the role, but the way the way story is told – in terms of visuals, characters, and action – is a real experience. What Kurosawa was able to do with the characters is amazing. This film has a world to say about human strength and weakness and about the nature of war (and the warrior). I think in most of his films, but certainly here, Kurosawa is working out his own demons. And I’m glad he did.
Seven Samurai, for me at least, is his third best film – just behind Rashomon and Ikiru. If you were to call it a masterpiece, you would be correct.

Sam, I thought Ran was generally considered one of his three best. Do tell.

I agree that many film critics would name Ran as his best CE, and it is a powerful story in every way, but I have to place it just behind the three I mentioned.
dang, it's hard to work out a 3 best films of akira kurosawa. i agree on seven samurai, rashomon and ikiru. and for some reason though, i really think stray dog and the bad sleep well are also way up there.
