He's such a classic. Everytime I think of him, though, it's always from Short Cuts where he's telling Lily Tomlin he's gonna get her out of Downey.
That's an amazing part of the film. The cafe scene always puts me in mind of his live album - Nighthawks at the Diner.
i remember when i was 19, travelling australia, i met a swiss girl who was soooo into tom waits, and i really did not know what to do with him at the time. maybe she played some of the less accessible pieces, don't know, but boy, have i changed my mind about the man ... he has become one of my favourites, and aaahhh his voice, his voice! and he is so funny, as well. have you ever seen "roy orbison - a black and white night"? at the end they have this little interview sections with orbison's friends who played with him that night, and tom waits says, leaning in the doorway, with a smirk on his face: "ahh you know, i used to babysit for roy ..." makes me want to cuddle him every time. :)
i continue to be amazed how well he and his wife have been co-operating, coming up with such wonderful songs for years and years.
