Let me announce plans for the Spring 2008 Issue with a call for submissions...

Appalachian Poetry for the 21st Century

Felicia Mitchell, poet and editor of Her Words: Diverse Voices in Contemporary Appalachian Women's Poetry, is the guest editor for the spring 2008 issue of Blue Fifth Review, an online magazine that features poetry, reviews, essays, and art. New work by poets with roots in Appalachia is solicited to provide a sample of poems that exemplify where Appalachian poetry is today. Felicia is looking for poetry that is rooted in tradition yet in touch with today's issues.

Send three previously unpublished poems by December 15, 2007, to fmitchell.ehc.edu@gmail.com. Submit work by email attachment (either .doc or .rtf). Short poems may be sent in the body of an email if format issues will not arise. Include a brief bio and full contact information (including mailing address).

Submissions of reviews of recently published books by Appalachian poets and brief essays will be considered too.

Visual artists are encouraged to submit digital copies of work for the cover and possible inclusion within the pages.

Editorial note: Please send no work that has appeared previously in print or online. The editor will consider work that has been posted on a personal blog, myspace or an online workshop with the following stipulation: Should the submission be accepted at Blue Fifth Review, the work should be removed from all posts and archives of the blog, myspace, or workshop. Simultaneous submissions are discouraged. Rights revert to author upon publication, although Blue Fifth Review does reserve the right to anthologize, in printed or electronic format, material originally published here. If work appearing in this journal subsequently appears elsewhere, the editor does request acknowledgement of Blue Fifth Review as the place of first publication.
