I only saw the Group once, in San Fran some 20 years ago, but Metheny has been in Basel twice over the last few years, once with duos with Charlie Haden, and once with the trio with Larry Grenadier and Bill Stewart. An endlessly fascinating player and a composer of total hooks. My favorite is probably "Hermitage" from "New Chautaqua" (which I heard Haden play with Quartet West in SF ... some 20 years ago).
thank you, sam! my faves of his are "sept. 15" & "it's for you" from the very excellent fandango movie and from as falls wichita, so falls wichita falls. the only one i own. oh, he's wonderful on a snowy sunday.
Thanks for listening - both of you. Andrew, a recording I listen to constanly is Metheny and Haden on Beyond the Missouri Sky. Lots of beauty there.
And Nicole, I think Wichita is probably Metheny's best, or at least near the top. It's the one that stays in my head.
The Metheny CD I tend to put on is "New Chautaqua," or sometimes "Question and Answer" with my man Dave Holland on bass and Roy Haynes on drums.
But my copy of "Beyond the Missouri Sky" would have worn out if it had been a vinyl LP! :-)
